The Onlooker II (El Espectador II)
Framed by the Artist. The human eye is an element of mystery. At the same time, it is used as protection in many cultures to avoid bad influences. It is also a representation of sight - an eye looking directly at us is a kind of menace. The black and white eyes are represented as a rational element amidst the colorful beauty of the peacock. The differing eyes represent differing ages, feelings, points of view. In Afro-Cuban culture the peacock feathers are used for protection - as are the eyes. While a painting is usually conceived for the enjoyment of the person viewing the work, in this case you can look at the painting, but you are watched as well.
